Do you feel like you can never catch up to your to-do list? Running a coaching business requires a lot of work. Learning how to be organized will help you plan out your day more effectively, which in return reduces the amount of stress it takes to run your business and your life.
It's important to remember that productivity isn’t about doing more; it’s about making more use of your time. And to be productive, you need to have a good system in place. This might seem more time-consuming than just trying to fly through your day but it will save you hours of time in the future. Sometimes we have to slow down in order to speed up.
In order for us to be able to plan out our schedules and even have a chance at becoming more organized at home while trying to run our businesses, we must first visualize what a perfect day in our life will look like.
You need the map before you can begin to create the directions.
We need a way to keep track of all the items we need to do. I find that there are 2 types of people when it comes to scheduling. There is the pen and paper kind and then there are the ones who do everything with technology.
Which one are you?
We need to figure out which type of schedule we prefer. Do you like to have a very strict schedule that you follow so that you don't have to think about what needs to be done? Or do you prefer more of a loose schedule with just enough things written on it to keep you on track for the day, but with plenty of room for flexibility?
It is very easy for us to create a long "Santa type" list of all the many tasks we have to do each day. But the reality is, you are setting yourself up for failure right at the start of your day. What Andy and I like to do is make a "What are all the things you wish you could get done list". And then from that, we look it over, choose the top 3 most important things we NEED to get done. This will set you up for success. So much more achievable. And you have your long list to refer to if you happen to get done with your things early.
The last thing we can do for ourselves is to write down all the things we know we need to do tomorrow, TONIGHT! Write them down. Get them out of your head so that you can be present with your family for the rest of the evening, or you can truly relax and not have all of those things rolling around in your head and you are afraid you will forget one.
